The 2026 shortlist is here - and they're heading to Hollywood!
Every year, filmmakers from every corner of the world submit their work to the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards with the same hope: to be seen, to be heard, and to take the next step in their journey. This year, over 8,400 films were submitted from 162 countries and territories, representing an incredible breadth of emerging talent from around the world. From that pool, over 30 filmmakers have been selected for the 2026 shortlist, spanning five categories: Fiction, Non-Fiction, Animation, Student, and Future Format. Huge congratulations to each and every one of them.
And what a prize awaits. The shortlist will soon be welcomed to the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City for a four-day program of workshops, screenings, and masterclasses - led by the Sony Pictures executives behind some of the world's most beloved films. It's an industry-immersive experience carefully designed to give emerging filmmakers a genuine stepping stone in their careers, opening doors to new knowledge, opportunities, and collaborations.
The week culminates on June 11 with a glamorous red carpet ceremony, hosted by the wonderful Denny Directo of Entertainment Tonight, during which this year's category winners will be revealed.
We're so excited to share the journey with you. Stay tuned for highlights and behind-the-scenes moments as the week unfolds.
Also announced today was the winner and commended entries of Future Format, a category which challenges filmmakers to respond to a technical brief that explores the creative possibilities of bold and innovative storytelling.
