Student Filmmaker

The Student Filmmaker competition rewards the talent soon to shape the industry.

All entrants must be studying a film course at a registered institution at a diploma or degree level worldwide. There are two categories: Fiction and Non-fiction. The competition awards two winners and their institutions from each category and a shortlist of up to 10 (maximum of five per category). Entry is free.

Institutions that make up the shortlist are selected by continent to ensure a diverse range of global talent.

Student filmmakers can submit a film into one of the two categories below.

Submissions must be between 5 to 20 minutes in length. The deadline for entries is 07:00 AM (CT) December 13, 2022.

*Topics covered in workshops will include: casting, physical production, animation, legal, CGI, innovation at Sony, pitching process, sound and music mixing, post-production, talent agencies, TV and studio tours.

Entry Requirements

Body
  • Students must enter their university or institution 
  • Videos can be shot on any kind of device or camera
  • Your video must be between 5 to 20 minutes long 
    • One submission per person 
    • Please make sure your submission is in English (or includes English subtitles)
    • You must own full copyright of your entry
    • Your film must have been created in 2021 or 2022 

    Before you enter, please make sure you have:

    • A description of your submission (add this to the ‘series description’ field) 
    • A link to your video, for example, it can be a Vimeo or YouTube URL, make sure it’s 1080 pixels ProRes HQ MOV*
    • A thumbnail JPEG that illustrates your project
    • Image used needs to be: 
      • JPEG format
      • Quality 10 or above
      • Between 1 to 5MB each 
      • Set to sRGB colour mode 

    *You do not need to upload an MP4 file

    Shortlist Requirements

    Body

    All shortlisted filmmakers will need to submit a high resolution file for screening and distribution purposes with the following specifications:

    • A high-resolution version with a minimum resolution of 1080 pixels ProRes HQ MOV and a minimum of 24 frames per second
    • Your audio mix and stems as separate files
    • Separated graphics
    • A 30 second trailer of your film

    Future Format

    The Future Format competition challenges filmmakers to respond to a technical brief – this year, submissions are to be shot exclusively on a smartphone. Entries can be shot on any smartphone but must be between 2 to 5 minutes in length.
